Biodiversity Register's (CES Approach) Workshop
In
collaboration with Centre for Ecological Sciences (CES), Indian
Institute of Science, Bangalore, a three-day workshop on People's
Biodiversity Registers (PBR) was organized on 13-15 December 2004
at the Van Vihar National Park, Bhopal. The objective of the workshop
was to develop shared understanding of the framework for documentation
of biodiversity through PBRs and the methodologies for documentation.
Targeting school and college teachers, and Non-Government Organizations
(NGO) working on biodiversity issues; the workshop had participation
of 40 representatives from various educational institutions and
NGOs. Resource persons from CES and Board facilitated the workshop.

Mowgli
Bal Utsav 2004
For developing biodiversity consciousness and conservation ethics in
younger minds, a three-day festival christened Mowgli Utsav was
organized by the State Government in the October. The festival was
jointly organized by the state Department of Biodiversity and
Biotechnology, Department of School Education, Tourism department
and the Board.
Peoples'
Biodiversity Register's training workshop for Vindyan Eco-region
Furthering
the conservation initiative in Vindhya eco-region, a five-day training-workshop
on the PBR process was organized at Rewa. The workshop targeted
selected NGOs across the eco-region who will anchor the PBR process
in the respective districts. The workshop had participation of 30
representatives from 23 NGOs from six of the seven districts of
the region. The overall objective of the workshop was to develop
competencies for facilitating communities in documentation of biodiversity.
The workshop was organized in collaboration with Zilla Laghju Vanopaj
Sangh, Rewa and was held at Environment Awareness Centre, Jayanti
Kunj, Rewa. Training design and process sheets for the sessions
of the training-workshops were developed in consultation with resource
persons. The training-workshop was conducted on 16-20 October 2004.

State
level Workshop of NGOs on Biodiversity Conservation
For
mainstreaming biodiversity concerns in the action programmes of
NGOs, a one-day workshop was organized on 29 July, 2004. The workshop
was organized in collaboration with Samarthan, Bhopal. The state-level
workshop had participation of more than 60 NGO representatives.
The specific objectives of the workshop were:
- To
develop a shared understanding of biodiversity conservation
- To
develop a better understanding of the Biodiversity Act
- To
understand the rationale and process of documentation of biodiversity
- To
define role of NGOs in biodiversity conservation
The day-long deliberations facilitated in crafting out the role
of NGOs in the conservation imperatives as well identify partners
across the state for collaborative action.
Teachers
for Tigers training-workshop
In
collaboration with Zoo Outreach, Coimbatore two 'Teacher for Tiger'
training-workshops were organized in the month of June. The first
workshop was organized at Pench Tiger Reserve, Seoni targeting school-teachers
from Seoni District. The second in the series was organized at Van
Vihar National Park, Bhopal targeting school-teachers from schools
in and around Bhopal. Most of the participant teachers were Master
Trainers of the Eco-clubs. The workshop informed the participant
teachers of a range of tools and methodologies, for imparting conservation
education and cultivating conservation ethics in the younger minds,
using Tiger as an icon for conservation of the entire ecosystem.
Inclusive of a range of outdoor activities, these techniques make
learning interesting and joyous for the students. Post-workshop
follow-up has reflected favorable results as well as spread effect.
A thematic group for 'mainstreaming biodiversity education in school
curriculum' has also been set up by the board to anchor the process
of strengthening biodiversity component in school curriculum.

Workshop
for Developing a shared action agenda for biodiversity conservation
To
commemorate the International Biodiversity Day, stakeholder workshop
was organized by the Board on May 22, 2004. The workshop was organized
in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Forest Management
(IIFM) and was held at IIFM. The objective of the workshop was to
further the biodiversity conservation actions being undertaken by
various agencies in diverse sectors and foster partnerships for
agreed upon goals. Specifically the workshop aimed at:
- Arriving
at a common understanding of biodiversity concerns in the state
- Developing
a shared action agenda for biodiversity conservation
The
workshop had participation of 38 representatives from GOs, NGOs,
academia and media. The first draft of the Biodiversity Conservation
action agenda was deliberated during the day-long deliberations
and the suggested actions were refined.
