Workshop
for Biodiversity Conservation for Sustainable Livelihoods: Role
of Board and Partners
The
Board organized a workshop on "Biodiversity conservation and
sustainable Livelihoods: Role of State Biodiversity Board and partners"
from 22nd to 24th December 2005 at IIFM, Bhopal. The workshop was
meant to provide an opportunity to share initiatives taken by the
Board in collaboration with different partners in various thematic
areas for conserving biodiversity and ensuring its sustainable use.
The key aim of the workshop was to solicit guidance from the Board
Members, specialists and partners engaged in the processes, so as
to provide strategic direction to the Board in effectively discharging
its mandate.

Project
Writing Workshop
A three-day
project writing workshop for the regional partners was organized
on 5-7 December 2005. The workshop was organized in collaboration
with Centre for Environment Education (CEE). The objective of the
workshop was to conceive and develop project proposals for conservation
and development, to be put up for funding under the Small Grant
Programme of United Nations Development Programme-Global Environment
Facility. The developed projects had been submitted to CEE.
Peoples'
Biodiversity Registers Training of Trainers
Developing
of human resource pool for anchoring decentralized training programmes
on documentation of biodiversity; a five day Training of Trainers
was organized on 14-19 November 2005. The training had participation
of select 26 representatives of regional partners from across the
state that exhibited potential for being groomed as trainers. During
the training, Direct Training Skills of the participants were hone
focusing on design and implementation of training programmes for
People's Biodiversity Registers to the identified audience. The
draft trainer's manual for PBR trainings was also tested during
the training.

Bal Utsav2005
The
state-level Mowgli Bal Utsav 2005 was organized at the Jhinna Treking
Camp, Panna during 25-27 October 2005.
Teachers
for Tigers-Advanced Technique Refresher Course:
MP
Biodiversity Board in association with Zoo Outreach Organisation
and Wildlife Conservation Society conducted a three-day 'Teachers
For Tigers' workshop at Pench Tiger Reserve and Van Vihar National
Park, Bhopal during June 2004. As a follow up of this, an Advanced
technique Refresher Course of TFT was organized at Van-Vihar National
Park Bhopal from 6-7 September 2005. The objective was to recap
TFT workshop, to explore into the ways of opportunistic utilization
of TFT tool aiming at a broader target group and to get a feed back
from about 30 workshop participants. The workshop was also to update
information related to teaching techniques and to boost teacher's
commitment towards the interest of biodiversity conservation.

PBR Training Workshop for Satpuda-Mahakaushal
Eco-region
Furthering
the conservation process in Bundelkhand and Satpuda-Mahakaushal
eco-regions, a seven-day PBR training workshop was organized on
20-26 September 2005. The workshop had participation of 34 representatives
from 32 Non-government Oraganisations of the eco-regions along with
two people's representatives. The workshop was held at the State
Forest Research Institute, Jabalpur. The objectives of the workshop
were to impart skills for developing PBRs soliciting functional
participation of local communities. Following the workshop, PBR
process has been initiated in select cluster of villages in the
eco-regions.
Training
Workshop for teachers on Biodiversity Education
To
sensitize young minds on issues pertaining to biodiversity and make
the environmental and biodiversity education interesting as well
more interactive, a Training Workshop for teachers from all the
districts of Madhya Pradesh was organised from 7-9 September 2005
in Van Vihar National Park. About 35 teachers participated in the
workshop, Dr Pramod, Education Officer, Dr Salim Ali Institute of
Orinthology shared his experiences and methods on handling of young
minds and giving constructive direction to their inquisitiveness.

Training Workshop for Malwa-Nimar Eco-region
A six-day
Peoples' Biodiversity Register Training workshop was organized for
regional partners in Malwa and Nimar eco-regions on August 31, 2005
to September 5, 2005. The workshop was organized at the Kasturba
Gandhi National Memorial Trust, Indore and had participation of
28 representatives from 17 Non-Government Organizations of the eco-regions.
The workshop focused on developing capacities for undertaking local-level
PBR documentation process in select clusters of the eco-regions.

Workshop for Nimar Eco-region
For
initiating biodiversity conservation process in Nimar eco-region,
one-day stakeholders workshop was organized on August 26, 2005.
The workshop was held at the Zilla Panchayat Meeting hall, Khandwa
and had participation of 41 representatives from regional actors.
Eco-regional strategy for conservation action was the outcome of
the workshop.

workshop for Satpuda-Mahakaushal Eco-region
Stakeholder
consultation for Satpuda-Mahakaushal eco-region was organized at
the State Forest Research Institute, Jabalpur on August 23, 2005.
The objectives of the workshop were to develop shared understanding
of the biodiversity of the eco-region among the actors, identify
conservation issues and identify long-term and short-term actions.
The workshop had participation of 66 representatives from an array
of stakeholders including Government Departments, Non-Government
Agencies, Academia and community members from the Jabalpur, Katni.
Seoni, Chindwara, Balaghat, Mandla and Dindori districts of the
eco-region. District wise action plans for multi-actor action were
outcomes of the workshop.
Workshop
for Mainstreaming Biodiversity concerns in District Planning
For
incorporating biodiversity issues in District plans, a two-day workshop
of District Planning Committees of select districts of the state
was organized on 11-12 August 2005. The workshop was organized in
collaboration with the State Planning Board (SPB) and held at the
RCVP Noronha academy of Administration and Management, Bhopal. The
workshop was follow-up action on discussions with the SPB for incorporating
biodiversity issues in district planning process. The workshop had
participation of members of District Planning Committees of biodiversity
rich districts of Sidhi, Chatarpur, Chindwara, Jhabua, Khandwa,
Sheopur and Bhopal. The workshop deliberations focused on intersectoral
analysis of on-going programmes and schemes for knowing their impacts
on biodiversity and developing strategy and action plan for incorporating
biodiversity concerns. Intersectoral analysis was taken-up for the
districts plans and actions identified for mainstreaming biodiversity
concerns in the district plans.

Workshop for Bhopal Eco-region
For
initiating biodiversity conservation process in Bhopal eco-region,
one-day stakeholders workshop was organized on July 26, 2005. The
workshop was organized at the RCVP Noronha Academy of Administration
and Management, Bhopal. The objective of the workshop was to develop
shared understanding of biodiversity of the eco-0region among the
participants and define strategic conservation actions.

Workshop for Malwa Eco-region
Initiating
the biodiversity conservation process in Malwa Eco-region, one-day
stakeholders workshop was organized on July 2, 2005. The workshop
was organized at the Kasturba Gandhi National Memorial Trust, Indore.
The workshop had participation of 74 representatives of Government
Departments, Non-Government Organization, Academic and Resarch Institutions
and community members from the Indore, Dhar, Ujjain, Dewas, Jhabua,
Neemuch, Ratlam, Mandsaur and Shajapur district of the eco-region.
The objectives of the workshop were to develop a shared understanding
of biodiversity among the participants and delineate strategy for
conservation action in the eco-region.

Livelihood
Training Workshop for Vindhyan Eco-region
Following-up
on the Vindhyan process, a livelihood training workshop was organized
for the regional partners on 17-20 June 2005. The objectives of
the workshop were to develop skills for planning and operationalizing
biodiversity-based livelihood interventions building on the outcomes
of the biodiversity documentation process. The workshop had participation
of 21 representatives of regional partners from the eco-region.
Ekant
Utsav
Initiating
the process of conservation of urban biodiversity, Ekant Utsav was
organized on the International Biodiversity Day May 22, 2005. Centered
around the Ekant Park in Bhopal and with the theme "Cultivating
a caring community at Ekant", the festival solicited participation
of the users of the Park. The event had an exhibition and discussion
forum. Organization of the event was facilitated through design
of brochures eliciting participation, panels showcasing the rich
biodiversity of the park and various values associated and other
operational arrangements. Outcomes of the event include participation
of users in management and activity groups. Decision to set-up an
interpretation centre was also arrived at and is being followed-up.

Bundelkhand
eco-region stakeholder workshop
Initiating
the eco-regional conservation process in the Bundelkhand eco-region,
a one-day stakeholder workshop was organized by the Board on May
17, 2005. The workshop was organized in collaboration with the Forest
Department, Chhatarpur Cirle and was held at the Meeting Room of
the Zilla Panchayat, Chhatarpur. The objective of the workshop was
to develop a shared understanding of the biodiversity of the eco-region
in livelihood context and to identify roles of various stakeholders
in the conservation process. The workshop had participation of 42
representatives for NGOs, Government agencies, research and training
institutions and community members from the Tikamgarh, Panna, Damoh,
Sagar and Chhatarpur districts of the eco-region.
PBR
training workshop for Chambal eco-region
Furthering
the eco-regional process in the Chambal eco-region, a seven-day
PBR training programme was organized for the eco-regional partners.
The training programme was organized in collaboration with Forest
Department Shivpuri and Dharti Sansthan, Morena. Organized at the
Forest School, Shivpuri; the training had participation of 39 representatives
from 35 NGOs of the eight districts of the eco-region along with
two representatives from the Forest Department. The training programme
was designed such that after completion of the training, the participants:

Training
design was developed for the programme after discussions with the
resource persons and the programme was implemented. The training
will initiate the biodiversity documentation process in the select
clusters of the eco-region.
Stakeholders
workshop in Chambal eco-region
Furthering
the conservation imperatives in the Chambal eco-region, one-day
stakeholder workshop was organised at Gwalior on February 7, 2005.
With the objective of developing a better understanding of biodiversity
of Chambal eco-region in livelihood ccontext and didentifying roles
of the stakeholdes in the conservation process; the wThe workshop
targeted actors in the eight districts of the eco-region namely
Gwalior, Datia, Bhind, Morena, Guna, Ashoknagar, Shivpuri and Sheopur.
Organized in collaboration with State Forest Department and the
NGO Dharti Gramothan and Sehbhagi Vikas Sansthan, Morena; the workshop
had participation of more than 80 persons representing various actors.
The workshop was held at the State Health Management and Communication
Institute, Gwalior. The proceedings of the workshop were prepared
and sent to the participants.

workshop in Satpuda eco-region
For
initiating the eco-regional conservation process in the Satpuda
eco-region, one-day stakeholder workshop was organised at Chindwara
on February 2, 2005. The workshop targeted actors in the four districts
of the eco-region namely Hosangabad, Seoni, Betul and Chidwara.
The workshop was organised in collaboration with the State Forest
Department and Madhya Pradesh Vigyan Sabha, a Non-Government Organization
(NGO). Held at the Centre for Human Resource Development and Forestry
Extension, Poama, Chindwara; the workshop was participated by 60
representatives from government organisations, NGOs, academia, research
and training institutions and community members from the four districts.
Proceedings of the workshop were prepared and sent to all the participants.
